The long-awaited update!

I've chatted with several of you over the last few weeks and you're all asking what's going on, so here's an update.

FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS: MONEY
1) I need to apologize for a donation that was never acknowledged. Back in August, Fett donated another share. The amount was added to the running total in my head, but I neglected to thank Fett & let you guys know about it. Mea maxima culpa!

2) Mal32 generously donated the proceeds of two books I sold for him, and while they did not get the money I hoped they would (more about this below), it has added $340 to the kitty. Total discussed in the next section...

SECOND ORDER OF BUSINESS: FEES
Ebay revised their fee structure back in August so that listing is cheap, but they whack you for more on the back end. Spreadsheet has been updated with the new figures. It has also been simplified; I combined all three fee columns into one field which calculates automatically based on the sell price.

THIRD ORDER OF BUSINESS: NEW BOOKS!
So the grand total we had available was about $615, so I started buying some books:

1) Blackstone the Magician #3 - SCANNED & UPLOADED
2) Men's Adventures #28
3) Marvel Mystery Comics #59 - SCANNED & UPLOADED
4) Marvel Mystery Comics #69
5) Marvel Mystery Comics #75
6) Mystic Comics (2nd series) #3
7) Young Allies #18
8) Space Squadron #1
9) Venus #15
10) Men In Action #9 - SCANNED & UPLOADED
11) Two Gun Kid #25 (I'm told this is the last issue we need)
12) Crime Exposed #1 (1948)
13) Official True Crime Cases #24 (#1)

Some of the books are coverless, and one (MMC 59) was coverless & missing the 1st wrap, but I have a fiche of it, so those pages have been restored. I've already sold Blackstone #3, and we actually made a small profit on that one. There's still $87 left to spend, even with the purchase of all those books.

Now, I mentioned this above, but I wanted to go into a little more detail. Right now, because of the economy, eBay sales are in the tank. It's great when you want to buy stuff because everything's dirt cheap, but reselling it hurts. We got lucky on the Blackstone book because it's not one you see often, but I can tell you that sales are awful. I have taken a beating selling my own books. Some of it is Christmas, but the economy is a big part of it. I am not going to start selling again until the second or 3rd week of January and I hope it gets a little better.

As always, suggestions on how to spend the balance are always welcome!

More updates

A quick update:

1) I bought two more books for the project: Ringo Kid 009 and Apache Kid 004.

2) They have been scanned and uploaded!

Black Rider 9 ($42) - SCANNED
Black Rider 13 ($30) - SCANNED
Blackstone the Magician 2 ($72) - SCANNED
Apache Kid 004 ($12) - SCANNED
Ringo Kid 009 ($7) - SCANNED

Project spreadsheet has been updated.

Summer vacation's over, get back to work!

I have returned after another break, I apologize for the lack of updates...

Here's the latest:

- I sold that Rawhide Kid #1 for more than we paid ($250), but after paying the ebay and paypal fees it ended up costing us $2.50 to buy and scan that book. I'd say that was pretty good, considering the price of the original purchase ($235).

- Right now the money is tied up in several purchases:
1) 3D Tales of the West #1 ($115) - SCANNED
2) Two Gun Kid 23 ($54) - SCANNED
3) Black Rider 9 ($42) - hasn't arrived yet
3) Black Rider 13 ($30) - hasn't arrived yet
4) Blackstone the Magician 2 ($72) - hasn't arrived yet

There's less than $35 left in the kitty at this point.

Also available at the 4shared site, some older books I hadn't done because they were rescans:
Wyatt Earp 005 - SCANNED
Wyatt Earp 025 - SCANNED

I am particularly excited about that Blackstone, as I was looking at another copy and it was $125. I always get nervous about buying pricier books because ebay is such a horrible place to sell stuff now, and it's so easy to end up taking a bath. We've been fortunate enough not to have lost more than $20 on any one book so far.

The spreadsheet has been updated and is available to download.

Another purchase

I didn't want to post this until I had the book in my hand, but I made another purchase for the group... 3-D Tales of the West #1. It was on eBay but I made the seller an offer and he pulled the book. We got it for $115. Considering I was thinking about buying the other copy on ebay for $299, this was a great deal.

I should have it scanned in the next week or so.

Rawhide Kid 001 uploaded

Title says it all!

In case anyone is wondering about the scan credit in the name (ASP-Pmack), I gave it some thought. I know there was a discussion a while back about some people not wanting to join a group per say, but I have been thinking that it doesn't seem right that I scan and upload a book and get all the "credit" for it, especially when it goes public. I decided to use the same credit conventions that the mighty Ontololgy uses when he scans fiche. When he credits the scan, even though he's done all the work himself, he always includes OldWayne, because OW supplied the fiche. (I know sometimes others edit fiche for him, but that doesn't affect my point.) I may have scanned Rawhide Kid 1, but it was supplied by the Atlas Scan Project and they will be credited accordingly.

So from this point on, I'm going to use that convention here as well. Credits will be (ASP-scan-edit). I share all the released files on DC++, and I've renamed them to this standard. Whether or not those of you who edit our scans want to follow this when you upload here is completely up to you, but when I share in the hubs or upload them to the newsgroup they will be standardized to this format.

Rawhide Kid #1

Here's some new info to keep you all up-to-date:

1) As discussed in the comments of the last update, there was a hard-to-find Rawhide Kid #1 up for auction, which I bid on and won. With shipping it came to $235. It has been paid for and I'm just waiting for the arrival.

This is the kind of book I was hoping this project would enable us to get. I don't think anyone here wants to spend that much on one book, so I'm glad you're all in on this.

Gambit informs me that we now only need three issues to complete the series: 5, 6 and 13. Which leads me into item #2...

2) I have sold just about everything we have already purchased and scanned. I think I have less that $25 in books left that haven't been sold yet. With the new donations to the group and the money not spent on RK #1, we have $85 in the kitty. At this point, I'm going to hold onto this money to purchase any/all of the three issues we are missing from Rawhide Kid. If you see one for auction or BIN, or on some other site, get in touch with me and I'll buy it. If you can't get in contact with me and you're afraid it will get sold, buy it yourself and I will fully reimburse you.

3) I mentioned new donations above: Mal32 kicked in another share. In addition, please welcome Fett to the group, who kicked in a little more that our average share.

4) There have been some new files uploaded:

Rawhide Kid 003 - edited by Teachbug
Patsy Walker 030 - edited by montagnard93

I also updated the scan_project file with the latest numbers. I haven't updated the checklist yet, but for those who aren't aware, Brigus has dropped a bunch of excellent-looking early Kid Colt Outlaws in the last week.

5) I'm going to try and set up an RSS feed for this blog later today.

Update: Don't Bury Me, I'm Not Dead!*

Wha? Who? Where am I? it's the end of May? Really? The last thing I remember is the bartender bringing me a drink he said was a special one, just for you... on the house.... Now my wallet and keys are missing, and I've no idea what happened to the last 7 weeks...

Anyway, there are some new files for download. I've updated the project and checklist excel sheets, as I sold several of the books. We took a beating on several of them, especially the books I bought from the seller "lilylovescomics", all of which were so brittle they completely split in half when I went to scan them. Of course this destroyed the resale value. Ugh.

Now available for download:
Apache Kid 12
Battle 29
War Comics 15

I also posted RAWs for Rawhide Kid 3 which will be edited by Teachbug and Patsy Walker 30 which will be edited by Mal32.

All I have left to scan are the two Wyatt Earp books (5 & 25), and I have 5 or 6 books left to sell, which I hope to list this week, then I can focus on getting a few big books like I talked about in the last update.

*post title comes from that cheesy 80s horror movie "The Serpent and the Rainbow".

New member / Project focus shifting

Another Italian member has joined, welcome! Roster currently stands at 14.

-------

OK, I have not been updating this as much as I should, and I've been a bit slow in scanning what has come in. Thanks for your patience!

I think the time is right for a shift in the focus of that this project is trying to do. I'd like to bring it back to how it was originally envisioned: a lot of small contributions to provide the capital needed to make a big purchase that no individual scanner would be likely to purchase on their own.

The reason for this is twofold: the first being that I just can't find the time to scan all these books. While it's great to buy & scan bulk for the project, I have a lot of my own books that need scanning and editing. I have a limited amount of time during the week that I can devote to scanning, and I'm not the fastest scanner around. With the nicer weather coming, I'm even less inclined to spend the weekends cooped up indoors scanning! I've gotten help editing, and while that has been greatly appreciated, even the time it takes me to raw scan half a dozen books is starting to eat up too much time.

The second is that I just really want to see some of these bigger books done, and we've reached a goal I had in my head about what people could reasonably expect for their contribution.

I've always thought that if things went horribly wrong and everyone lost all their money, I'd want to at least ensure people got their money's worth. We are at the point where the project has almost completed processing 34 books, which is to say that everyone paid less than a dollar per scan. Even if there were a few scans you didn't need or want, generally it was a good deal for everyone involved. I think we've accomplished that, so now is the time to start taking bigger "risks" by buying higher-priced books.

So what I'm proposing is that I finish scanning the books I have left (I believe there are 7 books unscanned at the moment), sell all the Project books remaining (16 total), look at the cash we have left and buy one or two big books.

This also means there might be some people who might want to leave the project now, and that's OK. Everyone came together with the idea of accumulating westerns, and now that we are shifting away from that, some may not be interested in what we're working on. Anyone who wants to leave the project should let me know and I will refund their current portion of the kitty once the last of these books are sold. I just did some quick math, and making an assumption that we'd lose certain amount of money on each book, I'm estimating that each share in the project is worth about $19 right now. It will likely end up more than that, but I am working with pessimistic numbers to be safe.

I am considering a few books at the moment. Suggestions are always welcome. I'm looking at books that can be purchased right now, but if you have some ideas on other books we should look for, speak up.

The Witness 001 - one issue Timely, mystery/crime. I know of two copies, one at $350 and one at $325.

Adventures into Terror 043 (001) - first issue, a copy is available for $130.

Sun Girl 002 - last issue to complete this Timely run, a copy is available for $270.

Project #3: Random Westerns (update #3)

Sorry about the lack of updates, I've been swamped with work, but I did manage to put some time into this project this week:

Blaze Carson 005 - (still waiting)

Two Gun Western (1st series) 009 CDN - received, won't be scanned
Western Outlaws 017 - received, won't be scanned
---------------------------

Some notes: I pulled Two-Gun Western 10 from Project #2 and dropped it in here so I could close the other project out.

The three books which have been scanned but not posted are 90% complete; I've scanned and cropped them, I just need to run a color edit and they'll be posted this weekend. The Outlaw Kid 004 has a clipped cover. I thought I had a high quality cover replacement, but the one I have isn't that hot. I don't really want to, but I will post it this weekend with both covers-- the lower quality complete cover and the higher quality damaged cover. At some point down the road I will release a fixed version.

I haven't bought anything for the project because I hadn't scanned these books yet. I have about half of them listed on ebay this week (ending sunday), so we'll see how that goes.

I have been in touch with the seller of Blaze Carson 5, and he assures me it's in transit.

I hope to have the final 3 books scanned and edited this week.

Two Gun Western (1st series) 009 CDN - received
Western Outlaws 017 - received
Wyatt Earp 005 - received

Some other stuff: if you had the 4shared page bookmarked, you'll have to bookmark it again, as I changed the page. Turns out the download hits we were getting were because 4shared automatically indexes the contents of shared folders for their search function. I received an email from some random guy who told me he loved the scans best of all the comics he found on 4shared. I did a few searches and found that other people were pulling our files and posting them on their 4shared spaces (search for "Pmack" or Rawhide Kid 015" to see what I mean). There is an option to turn the indexing off, which I did, but it's also likely that people had the old page bookmarked. All files have been moved to the new space; there's nothing different except if you happened to have the specific 4shared paged bookmarked.

As you can see from above, a few new files have been posted, including an update to the project and checklist files.

Project #3: More Random Westerns (update #1)

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been really busy these last few weeks with a big work project.

Here's the latest on this project:

Blaze Carson 1, received
Blaze Carson 3, received
Blaze Carson 5 (still waiting)
Outlaw Kid 4, received
Outlaw Kid 7, received
Ringo Kid Western 8, received
Ringo Kid Western 19 (still waiting)
Slim Morgan Brings Justice to Mesa City mini-comic (still waiting)
Two Gun Western (1st series) 9, received
Western Outlaws 17 (still waiting)
Western Outlaws & Sherrifs 67 (still waiting)
Wyatt Earp 5, received
Wyatt Earp 25 (still waiting)
Journey Into Mystery 65, received
Patsy Walker 30 (still waiting)

I kind of made a hash of this batch of books, sorry. Turns out Western Outlaws 017 has already been scanned, Wyatt Earp 005 has been scanned and posted this past week (although I am going to rescan it), and the Two Gun Western 010 I bought a few weeks ago turned out to be the Canadian version of TGW 009 which I bought last week. Details of the book are contained in the update post for Project #2.

I haven't gotten a chance to scan any of the books yet (the Blaze Carsons will be particularly difficult since they have taped and restapled spines), but hope to do so this week. Raws will be made available and I'll post when they are ready.

Also, check out the updated scan_project excel file, we made a (small) profit selling this week's books! Huzzah!

Project #2: Random Westerns (update #3)

Project #2 status:

Tex Taylor 003 - received, scanned, distributed, SOLD
Two Gun Kid 005 - received, scanned, distributed, SOLD
Wild West 002 - received, scanned, distributed, SOLD
Rawhide Kid 004 - received, scanned, distributed, SOLD
Tex Taylor 007 - received, scanned, distributed
Two-Gun Western (1st series) 010 - received, won't be scanned

Turns out I didn't read the auction carefully enough, and the TGW 010 is actually the Canadian version. The contents are identical to TGW 009 with the exception of the IFC & IBC (blank here), BC (different ad), 2 interior ads (entirely different from US version), and 2 edited ads (all info in the coupon box is deleted & the box is blank).

I don't think these changes are big enough to warrant scanning this book, especially since the Canadian version has such crappy printing overall.

As far as the sales of these books, believe it or not we actually made a profit! It was offset by some bigger losses on other books ($14 on WW 002 alone), but overall we ended up coming out ahead by a few bucks. All the gory details are in the excel spreadsheet which has been updated.

Of the books I listed this past week, only Tex Taylor 007 did not get any bids, so I have relisted it.

Project #3: More Random Westerns

With the addition of our newest member and looking at our unspent balance, I felt some pressure to get more books into the pipeline, so I went shopping this morning and started a new project.

Project #3:
Blaze Carson 1 ($17.50)
Blaze Carson 3 ($18.50)
Blaze Carson 5 ($14.50)
Outlaw Kid 4 ($5.50)
Outlaw Kid 7 ($7.50)
Ringo Kid Western 8 ($7.50)
Ringo Kid Western 19 ($6.00)
Slim Morgan Brings Justice to Mesa City mini-comic ($6.00)
Two Gun Western (1st series) 9 ($9.49)
Western Outlaws 17 ($13.00)
Western Outlaws & Sherrifs 67 ($9.00)
Wyatt Earp 5 ($7.50)
Wyatt Earp 25 ($3.75)

Journey Into Mystery 65 ($6.50)
Patsy Walker 30 ($8.75)

The last two non-western books are purchases I made from sellers from whom we bought one book. I did this to amortize the shipping costs. I'll do this occasionally if I think it makes sense. I'll try for westerns first, but if I can't make that work I'll try and find any Timely/Atlas book that needs to be scanned.

As with the last project, I welcome editing volunteers!

PROJECT COMPLETE

Project #2: Random Westerns (update)

Here's the latest update on what's going on:

We have bought 6 assorted Westerns:

Tex Taylor 003 ($12.50)
Two Gun Kid 005 ($21.50)
Wild West 002 ($29.00)
Rawhide Kid 004 ($19.00)
Tex Taylor 007 ($13.00)
Two-Gun Western (1st series) 010 ($9.00)

I have received and scanned the first three books, still waiting on the last three.

For the scanned books, I completed the raws and people have volunteered to edit them. Teachbug took Two Gun Kid 005, and Tomander and Gambit expressed interest in editing the other two, although I haven't delivered the raws to them yet.

We do have one problem with Wild West 002-- the auction said the book was complete (and it is in beautiful shape), but there is a page torn out. I sent an email to the seller, but I haven't heard back yet. I don't expect them to accept a return-- reading their feedback, someone bitched about a $175 book and they wouldn't take it back. I can't imagine they're going to be accommodating for us, but we'll see.

There are no incomplete stories (picture or text), so the missing page must have been ads. It was torn out so cleanly that I didn't even notice the damage when I flipped through it. I found it only because I took the book apart to avoid damaging the cover, and that's when I came across the half page. Even when I reassembled it I had trouble finding where the page should have been.

This leaves us in a spot-- when I sell the book, if I disclose the missing page, we won't get as much for the book, but if I don't, I might have to take the book back if someone notices. I personally think it should be disclosed.

In other news, RK19 sold, and after fees we ended up with about $49.00. Project spreadsheet has been updated accordingly.

Rawhide 15

Won Rawhide Kid 4 tonight for $15 plus shipping.

Rawhide 15 is in the repository.

I wasn't very good at math in school, but if there are 11 people involved in this group and some of the files have been downloaded 14 times, I'd say at minimum we have 4 new guests! Don't be shy, outsiders! Feel free to pop into the comments and say hi.

I'll probably scan Two Gun Kid and Tex Taylor this week, but I'm going to need someone to edit. My raws are big and sloppy, so download the test file I put up and see if you're up for the task and let me know.

Also, this 4shared place is picky about filenames. I updated the scan_project and scan_project_checklist files, but even though I deleted the originals I can't rename the new files, so they'll be dated from now on.

Project #2: Random Westerns

First off, below this one is a revised post with the latest updates on Project #1, so don't forget to read it.

Project #2 is sort of random. I put a call out to see what people wanted to work on next, and it was vaguely agreed upon by a handful of people that it should be "Timely Westerns".

Based on that, I bid and won two auctions:

Tex Taylor #3 ($12.50)
Two Gun Kid #5 ($21.50)

With the shipping, it came to $40. Auctions have been paid for.

Project #1: Rawhide Kid (continued)

Okay, to keep everyone up to date, here's a recap of what's going on.

First, we have another new member, bringing our total membership to 11. In keeping with tradition, I won't reveal his more common "handle" unless it's something he's OK with. He's posted a reply to this thread, but not under his usual name.

(A few people have asked me what the deal is with this, and I explain it this way: participation in this group is always assumed to be anonymous unless you explicitly state otherwise. It's not necessary to post here under your "known" handle, although if I don't recognize you I may send you an email to find out who you are. It's not that we're involved in SUPER SECRET SPY STUFF SHHHH!, but not everyone wants to deal with the hassle of getting grilled by outsiders or griefers, etc.

Although identities may be hidden, finances are not. I will always keep everyone informed of how much money I have collected and exactly where it has been spent and/or recouped. Anyone participating in this project has the absolute right to demand accountability at any moment. This is your money you've all entrusted me with, and I promise you all complete transparency.)

Anyway, Project #1 is almost complete, here's where we stand:

Rawhide Kid #17 ($133) - scanned, distributed to members, in the process of recouping our money on this. Sorry about the vagueness here, email me for details if you need them.
-----
Rawhide Kid #19 ($60) - scanned, distributed to some members, currently trying to unload it on ebay.
-----
Ringo Kid Western #11 ($8) - scanned, distributed to some members, haven't tried to resell it yet.
-----
Rawhide Kid #15 ($40) - Purchased, paid for, still waiting for it to arrive

Total collected: $330
Total spent so far: $241
Total recouped so far: $0
Balance: $89

A final note about distribution: This isn't meant to be some elite squad. I want to see these books distributed publicly. I only ask that members refrain from passing them around too widely until we have recouped on each book. The only way this project can work long-term is if we can get most of our money back, and giving the book contents away for free isn't the best way to do that :)

Project #1: Rawhide Kid (Revised)

Rawhide Kid #15
Rawhide Kid #17
Rawhide Kid #19
Ringo Kid Western #11

We had three new people contribute to the "cause" (Thanks Mal32 & his Italian friends!), which gave us a bigger budget. There are now 10 people who have contributed.

I mentioned bidding on the Rawhide Kid 15 and people seemed open to it, so I bid and won one yesterday. The total was $40, so the project right now has spent $241 of its $300 "budget".

I'll leave the floor open, as it were, for people to suggest a) what to buy with the leftover money and b) start thinking ahead to the next project.

I believe RK17 has been distributed to everyone, but if you did not get it, get in touch with me ASAP and I can give you either a Megaupload link or share it with you in the one of the hubs.

As mentioned before, it will be publicly shared once I sell the original on eBay. I got sidelined with a nasty bug on Sunday, but I hope to get it listed on Tues.

Project #1: Rawhide Kid

The first project will be:

Rawhide Kid #17
Rawhide Kid #19
Ringo Kid Western #11

The cost of these three books including shipping was $201 (RK17, $133; RK19, $60; RKW11, $8). (The Ringo Kid Western was added into it because it could ship for free with the Rawhide Kid 19.) I have already bought and paid for these books.

There are currently 7 participants in this round. I will not post handles of participants unless people agree it's OK.

Everyone's share will be $30. This is adding $1 which Paypal will deduct from your payment to me.

You can paypal the money to me via the email address found in my profile on the right.

I will post comments to keep people updated on the status. Feel free to post your own comments, questions, etc.

Ground Rules

The ground rules for the project:

We'll come to an agreement on what book or books we're going to buy and at what price, and I will buy it.

The donation for each participant will be determined by dividing the cost by the number of participants, but if that number is too high for someone they should donate an amount they feel comfortable losing.

I say losing because when we're done I will resell the book on Ebay. The money after selling fees will be split among all the participants. In most cases, because the nature of flipping on ebay, I expect to end up selling the book for less than we paid. (For myself, I usually consider a 30% loss acceptable; YMMV.) What we're trying to do is amortize that loss among several people so that we can buy pricier books without someone taking a $100 hit, etc.

After the sale, your share of the money can either be refunded to you or rolled into the next project. No one has to sign up for every project, so if you want in on one book but not the next, refunding your money is no problem-- just let me know.

As far as the scanning itself, I think what will happen is I will do a raw scan of the books, and the editing can be distributed among anyone interested. I'll probably make the raws available via DC++ to interested parties.

The only thing I would suggest is that we not distribute the finished scan to anyone outside of this group until the book has been sold and shipped. Why buy the cow when the milk is free, and all that...

Hopefully this will run smoothly and we can get a lot of stuff scanned and distributed!
