Project #1: Rawhide Kid (Revised)

Rawhide Kid #15
Rawhide Kid #17
Rawhide Kid #19
Ringo Kid Western #11

We had three new people contribute to the "cause" (Thanks Mal32 & his Italian friends!), which gave us a bigger budget. There are now 10 people who have contributed.

I mentioned bidding on the Rawhide Kid 15 and people seemed open to it, so I bid and won one yesterday. The total was $40, so the project right now has spent $241 of its $300 "budget".

I'll leave the floor open, as it were, for people to suggest a) what to buy with the leftover money and b) start thinking ahead to the next project.

I believe RK17 has been distributed to everyone, but if you did not get it, get in touch with me ASAP and I can give you either a Megaupload link or share it with you in the one of the hubs.

As mentioned before, it will be publicly shared once I sell the original on eBay. I got sidelined with a nasty bug on Sunday, but I hope to get it listed on Tues.

I see three possible directions to go next, depending on how much money we can raise, and what the principal interests of the participants are.

1) Get as much Atlas for our money as possible, without regard for genre of book, year of publication, title character, etc.
(Brigus and I were discussing the possibility of a raid on myscomicshop.com's $10 Atlas collection. which are mostly war books.)

2) Continue with the Western theme,
If we were to do this, my suggestion would be attempting to complete the years 1958 & 1959, which could be done by purchasing 8 Two-Gun Kids, and persuading our friends at ABPC to scan 12 books that (I believe) they already own.
Needed for this would be Two-Gun Kid 42,44,45,46,47,48,50,51. Or going after the remaining 7 Rawhide Kids. (or filling in some Kid Colts or Ringo, you get the idea)

3) There are just some books which are too expensive for any one person to buy on their own.
We pick one, and get that.
Perhaps 3-d Tales of the West, or Two-Gun Kid 1, or a Super-Hero book, etc.

Let's decide between options 1,2,3,(then talk specifics) or perhaps someone else can come up with a plan 4,or more.

The "principal interests" has been a point on which I've dwelled quite a bit. There is a portion of the "collective" here which I believe is mainly interested in Westerns. In addition, we've got BH, who probably has most of the horror or hero books, although not c2c, which is our goal. I know if we stick with Westerns he'd likely stay in because he's starting to work on those.

I'm up for just about anything, with romance books being on the bottom of the list (although Mal32 has requested we look into a rare Marvel mag from '75, "Gothic Tales of Love". I don't know anything about it.)

For me, the order of preference would be #3, #1, #2.

#3: I'd like to see big-money books bought and scanned before the "collective" collapses, which it inevitably will at some point, either by people dropping out or the resources whittled away by ebay attrition. I'd like to see some big-$ books rescanned properly, like JIM #1 (a low-grade copy just sold for $200).

#1: We'd have to look carefully at the mycomicshop.com books; I have about 25 war books to scan, and a lot of war books can generally be had for less than $10. In addition, I am hesitant about buying low-grade books from them-- according to grading standards, title-clipped books can be graded as fair, and I've been burned by them before on this. While the books can be scanned and the covers replaced, the resale value on clipped books is nil.

#2: I'm not opposed to westerns, but they aren't my favorites, either. But Atlas is Atlas, I suppose!

I'll throw out a #4, although it's half-assed at this point. There is also a good deal of Timely/Atlas fiche that isn't in the hands of the two main fiche scanners. I have bought some of it (approx 40 so far). It's time consuming to scan, which is why I call this plan half-assed; it's going to take me quite a while to scan the stuff I already bought. Plus, I have no idea on the resale value of fiche. It's cheap enough ($4 each), but it adds up.

In the end I am for whatever the majority decides, BUT I personally want to finish off all marvel westerns.
